LVBO Garden Villas

Design: JSA Architects
Location: Qingpu District, Shanghai, China
Architectural Area: 20,540 sqm, 57 Villas
Project Year: 2014

For this project JSA was invited to contribute a scheme on how to rebuild an abandoned residential community. Located in an inner Shanghai suburb, the existing site featured an amenity rare for new residential developments, a lush, mature landscape. The existing villa structures were beyond repair, however, so we centered our scheme on first preserving the landscape, then renewing the architecture, and finally tying the the development together with a network of paths so as to create a community, rather than a simple collection of cul-de-sac dead-ends.

The proposed villas were to have an L-shaped configuration in order to take advantage of the tight plots. A conventional compact plan would have the resulted in small, essentially useless yards.
