The Jiangnan Chang project started from a cluster of run-down, nondescript industrial buildings on an odd site fronting Shanghai’s Suzhou Creek. Each of the eight buildings were given their own identity based on their history, orientation or other special feature. The re-skinned, refurbished buildings were then knitted together by an interconnected landscape of small courtyards, alleys, porticos, and terraces that takes advantage of every available site opportunity.
Original Site Condition
The original campus consisted of a hodge-podge of buildings in various states of decay or renovation, with glazed pink tile, paint, and pseudo-classical detail all in the mix. But the close spacing of the various buildings and the awkwardly shaped site created a number of small passages, courtyards, and plazas that we knew could create a rich commercial environment suitable for a variety of tenants and uses.
